The check was presented to the employee of the store after she was named a win ner recently in a sales contest. . Mrs. Erdine Vann Given $100 j Prize in Sales Contest Mrs. Erdine Vann will have extra cash for Christmas gifts this year. She was named a winner in the third quarter Diamond Jubilee sales contest sponsored by Hudson-Belk Co. Mrs. Vann was a winner from the Wendell Hudson-Belk Store. The $100 cheek was presented to Mrs. Vann at the store’s annual Christmas party held at Dolphin’s Restaurant on December 6. It was pre sented to her by Lewis P. Tart, local store manager. Tart complimented the three-year employee. “We would like to highly compliment you on the fine work you are doing for the store, and the superior record you have achieved this year. Your enthusiasm and outstanding effort will add much to the success of our 75th anniversary year.” Mrs. Vann, the former Erdine Lee, is married to Talmadge Vann. "They are the parents of two daughters, Mrs. Carolyn Anthony of Wilson and Miss Jane Vann of the home. The family resides on Route 1, Zebulon. as**-* Southern Bell’s new Zebulon telephone directory is now being distributed. Delivery began December 14, 1963, R. U. Beck, Southern Bell manager, said today. “And you won’t find a better yardstick of Zebulon’s progress than the new telephone directory,” he said. “It shows just how fast this area is growing.” About 1650 directories are being mailed in this area. This is 50 i more than was distributed last; year. • You should have your directory i by December 23, 1963. If not,! please notify the Telephone Busi ness Office, said Beck. When you get the new directory, please throw away the old one, said Beck. That way, there’s no chance of your looking in the old directory and possibly getting a wrong number. Also, please look in the directory for a number be fore calling “Information,” said Beck. The new Zebulon directory has about 1400 alphabetical listings, 50 more than last year’s directory. The Classified section or Yellow Pages, also has more listings for business and professional people, and for products and services—all under headings alphabetized ac cording to the product or service you are looking for. OOOOOPS . . . Mrs. Faison, says it won’t hurt, Michael Bass of Wendell is thinking. I know different, but I’ll be brave. Mrs. Faison gives Michael a shot in her new public health clinic in Wendell. Watching the efficient Wake County public health nurse are Michael’s mother and little sister. Band, Chorus In Concert Wakelon School bands and cho rus will join in a Christmas con cert tonight (Thursday) at 7:30 p.m. The band is under the direc tion of Jimmy Burns and the chorus will be directed by Mrs. Robert D. Massey. No admission will be charged for the concert. The public is invited. Immediately following the con cert some members of the band and chorus will carol throughout the town and community. Wendell Church Having Pageant Wendell Baptist Church is hav ing its annual Christmts pageant Friday night, December 20. The pageant, composed of all age groups, will be presented in the sanctuary at 8 p.m. It is entitled, “Arise, Thy Light Is Come.” Prior to the presentation a fam ily night supper will be held at 6:30 in the Fellowship Hall. Fam ilies are to bring the food for the supper. Drink will be furnished by the church. During the supper hour musical entertainment will be furnished by the Young Peoples Department, including college students home for the holidays. The public is invited to attend all the services at the church. Candlelight Service The evening vesper service at Zebulon Baptist Church Sunday will be replaced with a candle light and carol service, it has been announced. This impressive serv ice will begin at 7:30 p.m. with the interim pastor, Dr. John Way land, officiating. Wakelon Basketball Quint in Tourney Native's Husband's Funeral Last Friday Frank S. Cooper, 46, husband of the former Ruby Temple of Zebulon, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, in Greensboro. Funeral rites were held Friday. He was manager of a chain of shoe stores in eastern North Car olina and Virginia from 1935 un til 1941. At the time of his death he was factory representative for the Freeman Shoe Co. He was a veteran of World War II, a member of the Carolina MAC’s and a member of St. John’s Methodist Church. Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Jenny Cooper, who attends Mars Hill College; his mother, Mrs. Lettie Cooper Perry of Pittsboro, and one brother, W. R. Cooper of Monroe. Funeral services were held at the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Cha pel in Greensboro. The Rev. Claude B. Bower, pastor of the First Baptist Church, and the Rev. L. F. Strader, pastor of St. John’s Methodist Church, officiat ed. Interment was in Green Hill | Cemetery. Installation An open installation of the of ficers of Zebulon Lodge No. 60£ for 1964 will be held Tuesday night, January 14, at 8 o’clock in the Masonic Temple. The public is invited to attend the ceremonies. School Board Promises News Of Meetings; Band Needs Told The Wakelon District School Committee voted at its last meet ing to give a report of each meet ing for publication to The Zeb ulon Record.. The paper heretofore has re ceived very little information from the local school boards, and has been asked numerous times why publication of action taken by the boards was not made public. At the December 9 meeting Wakelon Principal discussed be fore the committee the problem en countered in raising money to pay the band instructor, Jimmy Bums, for the current year. The prob lem was made more apparent when the Wake County School Board took action on limiting band tui tion to $3 per student per month. The committee agreed that the most critical financial need of the school for the current term is the band program, and that any con tributions for this purpose, with out soliciting in competition with the Band Boosters Club, will be appreciated. All civic organizations are to be Nativity Scene A nativity scene portrayed with live actors will be held at Wake field Baptist Church on December 19 and 20. The scene will be from 8 until 9 on each of the evenings. Background music will be pro vided. contacted and asked for contribu tions to alleviate the critical finan cial situation facing the school band program. The school committee meets the second Monday night of each month. Games Dec. 27-28 At Nashville Wakelon School has been invit ed to participate in the Holiday Invitational Double Header Bas ketball games to be held December 27 at Nashville High School. The Wakelon quint will play Spring Hope Friday, December 27, at 7:30 p.m., and Nashville High on December 28 at 9 pun. War renton will also play in this dou ble header. Wakelon is scheduled to meet Youngsville Friday, December 20, at 7 p.m. in the Wakelon gym. The schedule is: December 27: Spring Hope vs. Wakelon, 7:30 p.m. Nashville vs. Warrenton, 9 p.m. December 28: Warrenton vs. Spring Hope, 7:30 p.m. Nashville vs. Wakelon, 9 p.m. Pfc. Brayboy Is Stationed In Calif. Marine Private First Class Chester A. Brayboy, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester A. Brayboy of Route 4, Zebulon, completed combat training Oct. 18 while serving with the First Battalion, Fifth Marine Regiment, First Ma rine Division, Camp Pendleton, Calif. The six-week combat training was designed to increase combat efficiency prior to deployment to the Far East. The training ranged from firing of 81mm mortars to guerrilla warfare. They left for the Far East Nov. 7. Closing Suggested Zebulon Chamber of Commerce suggests that all merchants close Wednesday and Thursday, De cember 25-26, to give employees ample time to enjoy the Christmas holidays. Local Man Is Area Agent For Southland Insurance Co. Bobby R. Weathers, life-long resident of Zebulon and a graduate of Wakelon High School, is an agent with Southland Life Insur | ance Co. He is assigned the Zeb ulon territory. He formerly cov ered the Wendell area. Weathers has only been with : Southland Life since June 1 and [ already won the “Rookie of The | Year Award.” He is now quali fied for the company’s convention trip to be held in New Orleans July 16-19, 1964. His wife is en i titled to accompany him. Weathers is married and has one child. The family resides at : Hinton Acres on '.he Zebulon by | pass. He is a member of the Bap tist Tabernacle Church and Zebu lon Lodge, where he has been elected to the office of Junior j Warden for the coming year.
